Pseudonymisation

Security measure that replaces direct identifiers with pseudonyms.

Definition

Pseudonymisation (Article 4(5) of the GDPR) means processing personal data in such a way that it can no longer be attributed to an individual without additional information that is kept separately.

Context & regulatory framework

Unlike irreversible anonymisation, pseudonymised data remains personal data under the GDPR. It is nonetheless a recommended security and data minimisation measure.
