DPO

Data Protection Officer — the data protection lead, mandatory in many cases.

Definition

The DPO (Data Protection Officer) is the person responsible for monitoring GDPR compliance within an organisation. They advise, monitor and act as the point of contact with the supervisory authority (in France, the French supervisory authority (CNIL)).

Context & regulatory framework

Appointing a DPO is mandatory for public authorities, and for organisations whose core activities involve regular large-scale monitoring or large-scale processing of sensitive data. The DPO must have the independence, resources and skills needed to carry out the role.
